To RAEME Association NSW Inc.

I think my daughter wrote and told you of my husband, MAJ John Newton’s death.

I would like to take this opportunity of informing you a little of John’s army career. He joined the CMF in Sydney in 1939, and in 1940 enlisted in the AIF, and was pleased to be able to join EME as a radio mechanic. He sailed for the Middle East in December 1940, and spent time in various areas there. On return to Australia, he was stationed at Ipswich, and when RAEME was formed, he was an original RAEME soldier. He spent time at Lae and Moratai where he was serving when peace was declared.

In 1947 he transferred to the Regular Army and served until he retired in 1974. He joined the AIF as Craftsman, and retired as a Major. You may remember that he often went to Sydney for the ANZAC Day March, and was always happy to meet his old friends. He was very proud of the Corps, and maintained an interest until his death.

Yours sincerely,

Claire Newton
